3M Ingenuity Grants 2008 3M Ingenuity Grant Guidelines
The 3M Ingenuity Grant is a by-invitation-only grant to public upper elementary or middle schools located in communities with 3M facilities. Schools that participate receive a written invitation from 3M that includes an invitation code to access the online grant application. The grant recognizes teachers and helps them bring new methods and hands-on learning activities into the classroom. The name “Ingenuity” addresses the outcome: to bring new, ingenious learning opportunities into the classroom that furthers student learning, achievement and application of science, math or economics principles.
Established in 2003, over $760,000 has been awarded to 306 teachers serving 86,000 students. In 2008, up to $300,000 will be awarded to schools in 3M communities.
Eligibility
- Awards range from $500 to $3,500, determined by the scope of the program, and are single-year, non-renewable.
- Public school in 3M communities, grades 3 – 8.
- Purpose: For your ideas to increase student achievement in math, science or economics.
- Funds may support new or expansion of existing projects.
- Programs with the capacity to continue beyond 3M funding.
- Program must be completed by the end of the 2008/09 school year.
- Individual teachers, teams or schools may apply. There is no limit on the number of applications a school or district may submit or be awarded.
- One submission per teacher.
- Once an award is made, similar proposals from the same school are not eligible.
Funds May Be Used For
- Non-consumable items. It is the school’s/district’s responsibility to order the materials.
- Professional development for teachers to learn new teaching methods or further understanding of content. A curriculum unit is required to demonstrate outcomes of the seminar.
- Summer stipend to develop course work as a percent of the grant by an individual or teaching team. Stipends will be awarded according to guidelines established by the school district or bargaining unit. The stipend should not exceed $500 per teacher. Remaining funds may be used to purchase non-consumable items. A curriculum unit is required to demonstrate outcomes of the stipend.
Funds May Not Be Used For
- Field trips or travel
- Stipends to attend a conference
- Before- or after-school programs
- Substitute pay
- Faculty release time or salaries during school year
- Retention of consultants or stipends for classroom speakers
- Computers
- Multimedia projectors/white boards/think pads or similar equipment
- Replacement funds for school or school district responsibilities

- Requests must be submitted using the online application at http://www.3Mgiving.com/cash. Sorry, we do not accept paper forms.
- Under Nonprofit Center, click on Apply and Verify.
- Under Invited Requests, click on Cash donations.
- Scroll down to the K-12 Application Section. Click on the 3M Ingenuity Grant application.
This is an on-line application. To make it easy to apply, we will set up your account and link you directly to the on-line application. Each teacher must have their own account. We recommend that teachers request their account information NOW.

You have until March 3, 2008 to submit the on-line application.

At the welcome page, scroll down to the bottom and click on “Start a New Application.”
- To streamline your process, we recommend you print the application, create a Word document and cut and paste the information into the application.
- Before entering the online application information, create the budget using the Excel spreadsheet available on the same Web page as the application. Follow the instructions in the online application to attach/upload the budget.
- The application may be saved and completed at another time. To access the application, follow the log-in procedure noted above, enter your password and the invitation code. Click on the saved application. Search for your application by program title or request amount.
Selection Process
- A committee of 3M employees will select award recipients against the following criteria:
- Clarity of proposal - Alignment with guidelines - Clear results and measurements - Ability to be sustained beyond 3M Foundation funding
- Grants will be announced and funds presented in May 2008 to allow implementation in the 2008/09 school year.
3M Ingenuity Grant Recipient Responsibilities
- In spring 2009, 3M will send an e-mail that includes a link to the online grant evaluation. The teacher who requested the grant must complete and return the evaluation. If the evaluation is not received, the teacher is not eligible for future awards.
- Materials purchased through the grant are the property of the school that received the award.
